A Passion for Watercolor Painting
Discover art that resonates with your spirit and brings beauty and joy to your living space.
Watercolor is my medium of choice, allowing me to convey the emotions that nature uniquely stirs within me. While I've experimented with oils and acrylics, it is the fluidity of watercolor that resonates most deeply with my soul. When I immerse myself in the natural world, I find inspiration in the serenity and majesty that surrounds me—particularly in water, rocks, and trees. God's creation offers a unique blend of excitement and peace, and it's this dichotomy I aim to capture through my art. I am currently exploring semi-abstraction, a style that more clearly conveys the emotions I experience.
My creative journey often begins with a photograph—an image that captures a beautiful arrangement or an intriguing interplay of shapes. Yet, what truly anchors me to a scene is how it makes me feel. Whether it’s the play of light on a surface, the mesmerizing flow of water over rocks, or the nostalgic recall of childhood adventures in the woods, the emotional response to a place is my true muse.
Pursuing inspiration, I venture to places like Montana, where the scale of the landscape is a stark contrast to my Pennsylvania home. The vast mountains and cascading waterfalls exhilarate me, offering a new perspective. At home, I find inspiration in the shapes and patterns found within my flower garden—a living testament to growth and hope in my life.
In terms of technique, I begin each piece with a loose sketch using a large chunk of graphite. This initial sketch is designed to prevent me from becoming overly focused on details too soon. Using bold colors and a large stiff brush, I apply the first layers in a wet-in-wet technique, which helps establish directional shapes. As the paper dries, I refine the composition with smaller shapes, carefully preserving the unique and serendipitous color mixes that occur naturally. Finally, I add dark tones to emphasize movement and highlight the focal points, drawing viewers into the scene and inviting them to share in the emotions I've endeavored to convey.
Elaine Heitzer's journey as an artist began in the idyllic surroundings of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania. Growing up in a neighborhood embraced by woods, fields, and streams, Elaine's childhood was enriched with the freedom to explore nature. Even as a child, Elaine cherished solitary moments surrounded by birds and trees, foreshadowing her eventual path as an artist deeply connected to the natural world.
Art found Elaine from an early age, with its allure proving impossible to resist. Her natural talent for drawing quickly blossomed when her parents gifted her an art kit one Christmas, igniting a passion that would only grow stronger over the years. Oils were her initial medium of choice, capturing her surroundings with ease, and she would often be found sketching fervently, even amid the structured confines of a classroom.
Elaine's formal artistic journey saw her at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a BS in Art Education. It was 1989 when she ventured into watercolor, under the guidance of Tom Sheehan, followed by numerous workshops with esteemed artists like Don Andrews, Jean Dobie, Tom Lynch, and Sterling Edwards. Her evolution as an artist is marked by a transition from realism to a looser, expressive semi-abstract style, her confidence emboldening her brushwork and the vivid palette acting as her signature.
Throughout her life, Elaine's artistic pursuits were interwoven with the responsibilities and joys of family. Her home studio buzzed with creative endeavors, ranging from caricatures to murals, until her role as an art teacher at her children's school called upon her for eight years. However, the tragic loss of her youngest son to suicide marked a lengthy hiatus in her painting journey. It was only upon her return to watercolor that Elaine redirected her focus wholly onto subjects that truly spoke to her soul, resulting in the captivating body of work she is known for today.
Nature remains Elaine's inexhaustible muse, a divine canvas painted with the emotions she seeks to portray. Through her eyes, God's creation is seen anew, infusing awe and tranquility into her compositions. Her process begins with photography, capturing nature's essence, followed by loosely drawn designs that emerge onto 300lb paper. Elaine's technique has evolved to a point where she allows watercolors to guide her, mingling large wet brush strokes that gradually coalesce into intricate detail—each painting an intimate dialogue between the artist and nature.
Among her favorite projects is a recent commission depicting a church veiled by trees, serene layers illuminated by a rising sun. Such works, rich with meaning and spiritual tranquility, affirm her artistry’s unique voice. Influenced by luminaries like Sterling Edwards and Georgia O'Keeffe, Elaine's paintings have been recognized in esteemed circles, notably accepted into the 2024 Aqueous International and Hoyt Regional shows and celebrated as the featured artist at the 2024 Saxonburg Art Show.
Elaine's connection to her art is underscored by her roles beyond the canvas. As a worship leader, she translates this artistry into spiritual experiences, designing worship services that evoke the same invitation to connect and reflect. Here, her artistic ethos merges seamlessly with her faith, amplifying her creative vision to inspire and resonate with others.
As part of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Pittsburgh Watercolor Society, Cranberry Artist's Network, and Saxonburg Art Show committee, Elaine continues to champion the integral role art plays in society. Her ultimate goal is to bring viewers into communion with the beautiful nuances of the natural world, encouraging them to pause, appreciate, and reconnect with their humanity. As the society around her grows increasingly fast-paced, Elaine's art stands as a gentle reminder of the beauty that surrounds us, a testament to the wonders that even the simplest aspects of nature hold.
